AI-Agentic Domain Platforms: The 2026 Guide
Every platform where an AI agent can search, price, and register a domain in 2026 — Cloudflare, Name.com, Namefi — by interface, payment, autonomy.

A year ago, "AI and domains" meant a name generator: you typed a business idea into a box, it spat out a list of .com and .ai suggestions, and you clicked through to a normal human checkout. That is still a real category, and a useful one. But it is no longer the whole story.
Since early 2026, a second category has become real: platforms where an AI agent — not a person clicking a mouse — can search availability, read a price, and complete the registration itself, as one step inside a longer task like "spin up a landing page for this idea and put it on a real domain." That is a meaningfully different thing from a smarter suggestion box, and the two get confused constantly, including in a lot of the marketing copy written about them.
This guide is the map. It covers the interface patterns that make a platform usable by an agent at all, walks through the specific platforms that support agentic registration today (what each can and cannot actually do, verified against their own documentation), and contrasts that with what the big incumbent registrars offer instead. One note before we start: several of the platforms below are in public beta, and beta features change. Everything here is checked against live documentation as of this guide's publish date — treat any specific capability claim as current as of then, not as a permanent spec.
Why domain registration moved into the agent layer
For twenty-plus years, registering a domain meant a browser session: a search box, a cart, a payment form, often a CAPTCHA to prove a human was driving. Registrars have had programmatic APIs for most of that time, but those APIs were built for other software systems — a hosting dashboard, a bulk-renewal script — not for a language model deciding, mid-conversation, that a project needs a name.
Two things changed in quick succession. First, in July 2025, Name.com announced what it called the first AI-native domain platform: an API built around Model Context Protocol (MCP) and OpenAPI schemas, explicitly designed so a coding agent could read the spec and write working registration code from a plain-language request such as "add domain registration to my app" (Name.com). Second, on April 15, 2026, Cloudflare put a Registrar API into public beta with the explicit pitch that "the Registrar API makes it possible to search for domains, check availability, and register them programmatically" (Cloudflare Blog, via industry coverage) — and, notably, wired it directly into the Cloudflare MCP server that agents in Cursor and Claude Code already had access to.
That second move is the one that got written about widely, because Cloudflare is a large, familiar registrar and the framing was blunt: domain registration, a task that had resisted automation because it needed a human to click "I agree" and enter a card number, had quietly become something an agent could do as a subroutine. CircleID's mid-2026 survey of the domain industry put it directly: "AI agents are increasingly acting as domain resellers checking availability, registering names, and configuring DNS without human intervention" (CircleID, April 2026).
None of this happened because registries changed their rules. It happened because a handful of platforms decided to make their existing purchase flow legible to a machine caller instead of only a browser, which turns out to require more than "publish an API."
Three interface patterns: raw API, MCP server, and llms.txt

- A raw REST API. The oldest pattern. Any registrar with a developer API technically lets software register a domain. The catch is discovery: an agent has to already know the API exists, already have documentation in its context, and already have a client written against it. A REST API alone doesn't tell a general-purpose agent it's there or how to use it correctly.
- An MCP server. MCP is an open, model-agnostic protocol — described by its maintainers as "a standardized way to connect AI applications to external systems," comparable to "a USB-C port for AI applications" (modelcontextprotocol.io) — for exposing a defined set of callable tools to any compatible AI client: Claude, Cursor, Windsurf, and others. A registrar that ships an MCP server is handing an agent a menu of exact operations (
search_domain,register_domain,set_dns_record) instead of a wall of REST documentation to reverse-engineer. - An llms.txt-discoverable API. llms.txt is a plain-text convention — a
/llms.txtfile at a site's root — proposed in 2024 to give language models a concise, curated index of a site's key documentation and capabilities, the same wayrobots.txtgives crawlers permission rules. A registrar publishing one at, for instance,namefi.io/llms.txt, lets an agent that has never seen the platform before discover what it can do without a human first pasting API docs into the conversation.
These are not competing standards; the strongest platforms layer all three, using llms.txt for discovery, an MCP server for the actual tool calls, and the REST API underneath both.
Platform by platform
Cloudflare Registrar API (beta)
Cloudflare's beta, live since April 15, 2026, covers three operations: search, availability and pricing checks, and registration — what Cloudflare itself describes as "the first critical moment in the domain lifecycle," with transfers, renewals, and contact updates promised for later in the year (Cloudflare Blog). Pricing follows Cloudflare's long-standing registrar model: "we charge exactly what the registry charges," with no markup, whether the call comes from the dashboard, the API, or an agent (Cloudflare Blog).
The agent-facing part is the integration, not a separate product: "the Registrar API is part of the full Cloudflare API, which means agents already have access to it today through the Cloudflare MCP," and "an agent working in Cursor, Claude Code, or any MCP-compatible environment can discover and call Registrar endpoints" (Cloudflare Blog). Cloudflare's own description of the intended flow keeps a checkpoint in it — an agent can "suggest names, confirm which one is actually registrable, surface the price for approval, and then complete the purchase" (Cloudflare Blog) — but as documented, that's a design suggestion rather than an enforced spend-cap primitive in the API itself.
Two caveats worth knowing before you plan around it: the beta doesn't yet cover the full Cloudflare TLD catalog, only what Cloudflare calls "a curated set of popular TLDs to start" (Cloudflare Blog), and it's billed to an existing Cloudflare account, which is a fiat, human-onboarded relationship even when an agent is the one calling the API.
Name.com AI-native API
Name.com's platform, announced in July 2025, is built around the same natural-language-to-code idea: a developer or agent describes what they want ("add domain registration to my app") and the platform's documentation is structured so an AI client can turn that into working integration code, using MCP and OpenAPI as the underlying scaffolding, with self-service developer access and support for tools like Claude and Cursor (Name.com). Pricing is transparent and volume-based, with the reseller-style markup structure common to registrar APIs.
What Name.com's announcement doesn't document is a crypto or wallet-based payment path, or an explicit human-in-the-loop confirmation step baked into the API itself — both are plausible given a standard developer-account model, but they're not spelled out in the source, so treat "fiat, account-based billing" as the working assumption rather than a fully confirmed detail.
Namefi: MCP server plus wallet checkout
Namefi's own machine-readable capability index — namefi.io/llms.txt — is itself an example of the third interface pattern above, and it's the single source of truth for what follows. Namefi runs an MCP server at api.namefi.io/mcp over Streamable HTTP, exposing typed tools for registration, availability checks, and DNS management; it can be added to Claude Code with a single command (claude mcp add --transport http namefi https://api.namefi.io/mcp). Underneath, there's a REST API (api.namefi.io/v-next/) authenticated with an x-api-key header — the key has to be generated from the wallet that owns the domain, which ties API access directly to on-chain custody rather than a separate account-recovery flow.
The differentiator is payment. Namefi documents two paths: the standard API-key route, billed against a prepaid NFSC (Namefi Service Credits) balance, and a crypto-native route using wallet signatures — including SIWE (Sign-In With Ethereum) — for what its docs describe as Web3 users and "agentic wallets," letting a purchase be authorized without creating a registrar account at all. Post-registration, Namefi supports full DNS record CRUD (A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, and more), auto-renewal, domain parking and forwarding, automatic ENS record generation, and — the feature that distinguishes it structurally from the other two platforms here — tokenization: representing a real, ICANN-registered domain as an on-chain wallet-held asset. One gap worth flagging plainly: Namefi's llms.txt does not publish a fixed list of which TLDs are supported. If TLD coverage is the deciding factor for your use case, verify it directly against the current documentation before committing.
What incumbents like GoDaddy and Namecheap offer instead
It's worth being precise about why the large consumer registrars aren't in the table above, because "AI domain search" gets used to describe two genuinely different products. The major incumbents have invested heavily in AI-assisted name suggestion and onboarding: tools that take a description of your business and generate brandable name candidates, sometimes bundled with a logo or starter-site generator. That's a real, useful product. It is not the same category as the platforms above, because the AI in that flow assists a human's decision — it doesn't hold the authority to search, price, and complete a registration on its own, callable as a tool by an external agent. A person still lands on a checkout page and clicks buy. Until an incumbent publishes an agent-callable API, an MCP server, or an llms.txt file with the same authority the three platforms above document, it belongs in the "AI helps a human choose" category rather than this one.

How to choose
- You already live in the Cloudflare ecosystem and just need search-check-register today. The Registrar API is the lowest-friction option if your domains and DNS already sit on Cloudflare, with the tradeoff that the beta's TLD list and feature set are still narrower than a full registrar.
- You're building a reseller or multi-tenant product on top of domain registration. Name.com's volume pricing and self-service developer access were built with resellers in mind.
- Your agent needs to transact without a pre-existing human-owned account, or you want the domain itself to be a portable, wallet-held asset. Frequently Asked Questions
Can ChatGPT or Claude buy me a domain right now?
It depends entirely on which tools that specific chat client has access to, not on the model itself. A model like Claude has no built-in ability to register a domain; it needs to be connected to a platform's MCP server or API (for example, Namefi's MCP server, or Cloudflare's Registrar API through the Cloudflare MCP) before it can search, price, and complete a purchase. Without that connection, an AI assistant can only suggest names for you to register yourself.
Is it safe to let an AI agent register domains and spend money without checking with me first?
Treat it the way you'd treat any automated purchasing authority: bound it before you grant it. The safest patterns documented across these platforms are a prepaid balance that caps total exposure (Namefi's API-key path), a per-transaction signature that can't be reused (wallet-signed checkout), or a manual confirmation step before the final purchase call. None of the platforms in this guide enforce a universal spend cap on your behalf — you set the guardrail, typically through account funding limits or an explicit confirmation step in your own agent's workflow.
What's the actual difference between an API, an MCP server, and llms.txt?
A REST API is the underlying set of callable operations. An MCP server packages a defined subset of those operations as discrete tools that any MCP-compatible AI client can call directly, without custom integration code. An llms.txt file is a discovery layer — a short, curated index at a site's root that tells an agent what documentation and capabilities exist in the first place, the way robots.txt tells a crawler what it may index. A platform can have any one of the three alone, but the strongest agent-native platforms combine all three: llms.txt to be found, MCP to be called, REST underneath both.
Do I need a cryptocurrency wallet to use any of these platforms?
No. Cloudflare and Name.com both use standard fiat, account-based billing, and Namefi supports the same kind of API-key billing against a prepaid balance. A wallet is only required if you specifically want Namefi's no-account, wallet-signed checkout path or its tokenized-ownership feature.
Which of these platforms is the most "finished" today?
None of them should be treated as a finished, unchanging spec — Cloudflare's is explicitly labeled beta with a narrower TLD list than its full catalog, and beta features are, by definition, subject to change. Verify current capabilities against each platform's live documentation before you build a dependency on a specific feature.
