A registrant is the person or organization that holds the rights to a registered domain — the registered name holder on record. The registrant contracts with a registrar, which in turn works with the registry under ICANN rules; the registrant is the closest thing the traditional system has to an "owner," though those rights live in a registrar account rather than something you hold directly.
